How to Clean a PS5 Controller (DualSense) Safely

The PS5 DualSense controller is packed with features: a touchpad, adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone and speaker, and soft rubber thumbstick grips. It also comes in white, which shows every bit of grime. Here's how to clean it safely.

What You'll Need

  • A microfiber cloth
  • A cleaner made for electronics
  • Cotton swabs
  • A soft, dry brush or handheld air pump

Step 1: Turn It Off and Unplug It

Press the PS button, open Accessories in the control center and turn the controller off. Or just turn off your PS5. Unplug the USB-C cable.

Step 2: Wipe the Shell and Grips

Lightly mist your microfiber cloth with cleaner and wipe the grips, the back and the face of the controller. The grips collect the most oil and sweat, so give them a little extra attention. Never spray the controller directly.

Step 3: Clean the Touchpad

Wipe the touchpad with a lightly misted cloth using gentle, even strokes, then buff it dry. Don't press down hard, since the touchpad also clicks.

Step 4: Detail the Buttons and D-Pad

Dampen a cotton swab and trace around the edges of the action buttons, the D-pad, and the Create, Options and mute buttons. Use a fresh swab as soon as one gets dirty.

Step 5: Clean the Triggers and Bumpers

Hold each trigger down and wipe the exposed sides with a damp swab, then do the same for L1 and R1. Don't force the adaptive triggers past their normal range.

Step 6: Clean the Thumbsticks

Wipe the tops of the sticks with your cloth. Then tilt each stick all the way to one side and clean the exposed base with a swab, rotating as you go. The rubber grips can tear, so be gentle.

Step 7: Clear the Speaker, Mic and Port

Use a dry brush or short bursts of compressed air on the speaker grille, the microphone holes, the headphone jack and the USB-C port. Keep liquid away from all of them.

Step 8: Let It Dry

Give the controller a few minutes to dry completely before charging it or playing.

Keeping a White Controller White

  • Wash your hands before long sessions.
  • Wipe the grips after each session.
  • Keep snacks away from your controller, or use a fork for greasy ones.
  • Avoid bleach, which can yellow or damage the plastic.
