The 2-Minute Daily Tech Hygiene Routine

The 2-Minute Daily Tech Hygiene Routine

We brush our teeth, wash our hands and wipe down the kitchen, but most of us rarely clean the devices we touch all day. Tech hygiene doesn't need to be a big job. Two minutes a day, plus a slightly longer clean once a week, is enough to keep everything looking and feeling fresh.

What You'll Need

  • A microfiber cloth (keep one at your desk and one in your bag)
  • A screen-safe cleaner

Daily Minute 1: Your Phone

At the end of the day, give your phone a quick wipe with your microfiber cloth: screen first, then the back and edges of the case. If it's greasy, lightly mist the cloth with cleaner first.

Daily Minute 2: Your Most-Touched Items

Pick the other things you handle most and give each a quick wipe. For most people that means:

  • Laptop keyboard and trackpad
  • Earbuds and their charging case (dry cloth only around the speakers)
  • Mouse
  • TV remote or game controller

The Weekly Deeper Clean (10 Minutes)

Once a week, set aside a few extra minutes to:

  1. Take your phone out of its case and clean both.
  2. Clean your laptop screen and blow crumbs out of the keyboard.
  3. Dust your TV and monitor screens.
  4. Clean smartwatch bands and fitness trackers.
  5. Wash your microfiber cloths.

Tips to Make It Stick

  • Attach it to something you already do, like plugging in your phone at night.
  • Keep your cloth where you'll see it.
  • Set a weekly reminder for the deeper clean.
  • Clean more often in cold and flu season or after travel.
