Clear phone cases look great on day one. A few months later, many of them have turned yellow or cloudy. Some of that is dirt you can clean off, and some of it isn't. Here's what's going on and how to get your case as clean as possible.
Why Clear Cases Turn Yellow
- Sunlight. UV light slowly breaks down the plastic, especially soft silicone and TPU cases.
- Heat from charging, gaming, your hand or a hot car speeds it up.
- Skin oils and sweat build up on the surface and darken over time.
Can You Fix the Yellowing?
Mostly no. Cleaning removes surface grime, which can make a big difference if your case is just dirty. But yellowing caused by UV light and heat is a change in the material itself, and cleaning can't reverse it. If your case is still yellow after a good clean, it's time for a new one.
How to Clean a Clear Case
Step 1: Take the Case Off
Always remove the case from your phone first. Never put your phone near water.
Step 2: Wash With Mild Soap or Safe Cleaner
Use a safe all-purpose electronics cleanser with microfiber cloth or mix warm (not hot) water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Scrub the case inside and out with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to corners and the camera cutout.
Step 3: Scrub Stubborn Grime
For grime that won't shift, us a safe all-purpose electronics cleaner. Scrub with the edge of the micro fiber cloth or detailing bristle brush. It can lift stains and grime, but it won't remove yellowing in the plastic.
Step 4: Dry Completely
Rinse the case well and dry it with a microfiber cloth. Let it air dry for a while before putting it back on. Trapped moisture can mark your phone.
Step 5: Clean Your Phone While It's Bare
While the case is off, use a safe electronics cleaner wipe your phone's back and edges with a microfiber cloth. Grime builds up under the case too.
What to Avoid
- Boiling water or a dishwasher, which can warp the case
- Bleach or harsh household cleaners
- Abrasive scrubbers that scratch the surface
How to Slow Down Yellowing
- Keep your phone out of direct sun and hot cars.
- Clean your case every week or two so oils don't build up.
- Take the case off if your phone gets hot while charging.
- Next time, consider a hard polycarbonate case, which tends to resist yellowing better than soft silicone.
