How to Clean a Computer Monitor Without Streaks

How to Clean a Computer Monitor Without Streaks

You look at your monitor for hours a day, but dust and fingerprints build up so slowly that it's easy not to notice. A proper clean takes two minutes and makes text sharper and colors clearer. Here's how to do it without leaving streaks or damaging the screen.

What You'll Need

  • A clean, dry microfiber cloth
  • A screen-safe cleaner made for electronics

Step 1: Turn It Off and Let It Cool

Switch the monitor off and unplug it. A dark screen shows dust and smudges clearly, and a cool screen won't dry the cleaner too fast, which is a common cause of streaks.

Step 2: Dry Dust First

Gently wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth in long, light strokes. This removes dust that could otherwise be dragged across the screen. For many monitors, this step alone is enough.

Step 3: Mist the Cloth

Lightly spray a clean section of your cloth with screen cleaner. The cloth should be barely damp. If spraying on the screen leave 6-12inches of distance so that the liquid sprayed is a finer mist when it directly sprayed on a monitor so that the liquid cannot run down into the bottom edge of the panel.

Step 4: Wipe in One Direction

Wipe from top to bottom or side to side with light, even pressure. Don't scrub in circles on stubborn spots. Hold the damp cloth on the spot for a few seconds to soften it, then wipe.

Step 5: Buff Dry

Use a dry part of the cloth to buff the screen lightly in the same direction. This is what removes streaks.

Step 6: Clean the Frame and Stand

Wipe the bezel, stand and back vents with your cloth. Dust collects on top of the monitor and around the vents.

Tips for Different Screens

  • Matte (anti-glare) screens: the coating is delicate. Use very light pressure.
  • Glossy screens: they show streaks more, so the dry buffing step matters most.
  • OLED monitors: avoid pressing on the panel.
  • Touchscreen monitors: clean them more often, since they collect fingerprints quickly.

Why You're Getting Streaks

  • Too much cleaner on the cloth
  • A dirty cloth
  • Cleaning a warm screen
  • Skipping the dry buff at the end
  • Using tap water, which can leave mineral spots

What to Avoid

  • Paper towels and tissues, which can scratch and leave lint.
  • Household glass cleaner. Ammonia and other harsh chemicals can damage anti-glare coatings.
  • Pressing hard on the screen.
