If you wear glasses, you probably clean them several times a day, often with the corner of your shirt. Unfortunately, that's one of the quickest ways to scratch your lenses and wear down their coatings. Here's how to clean them properly.
What You'll Need
- A clean microfiber cloth
- Safe All-purpose cleaner
- A lens-safe cleaner (optional)
Step 1: Wash Your Hands
Start with clean hands so you don't transfer oils and dirt back onto the lenses.
Step 2: Rinse the Lenses
Hold your glasses under lukewarm running water. This washes away dust and grit that could scratch the lenses when you wipe. Avoid hot water, which can damage some lens coatings.
Step 3: Wash Gently
6-12inches of distance so that the liquid sprayed is a finer mist when it directly sprayed on with you microfiber cloth gently rub both sides of each lens, the nose pads and the frame. Pay attention to where the lenses meet the frame, where grime builds up.
Step 4: Rinse and Shake Dry
Rinse everything thoroughly, then gently shake off the excess water.
Step 5: Dry With Microfiber
Dry the lenses and frame with a clean microfiber cloth, using light pressure. Check them against the light, and buff away any remaining spots.
Cleaning on the Go
When you can't get to a sink, lightly mist a lens-safe cleaner onto your microfiber cloth and wipe gently. Blow off any visible grit first.
Mistakes That Scratch Lenses
- Your shirt or sweater. Fabric traps dust and grit.
- Paper towels and tissues. Their fibers can scratch lenses.
- Wiping dry lenses covered in dust. Always rinse or blow off grit first.
- Household glass cleaner. It can damage anti-reflective and other lens coatings.
- A dirty cloth. Wash your microfiber cloth regularly.
