How to Clean a Laptop Screen and Keyboard

Laptops go everywhere with us: the kitchen table, the couch, the coffee shop. That means crumbs in the keyboard, fingerprints on the trackpad and a screen covered in smudges and dust. The good news is that cleaning it properly takes about five minutes.

What You'll Need

  • A clean, dry microfiber cloth
  • A screen-safe cleaner made for electronics
  • A can hand air pump or a soft brush (optional, for the keyboard)

Step 1: Shut Down and Unplug

Turn your laptop off completely, not just to sleep, and unplug the charger and any accessories. Cleaning a live keyboard can trigger random keystrokes, and a powered-off screen makes smudges easier to see.

Step 2: Clear the Keyboard

Tilt the laptop at an angle and use handheld air pump to blow crumbs and dust out from under the keys.

Step 3: Wipe the Keys and Trackpad

Lightly mist your microfiber cloth with cleaner and wipe across the keys, the palm rest and the trackpad. The cloth should be barely damp. Never spray liquid onto the keyboard itself.

Step 4: Dust the Screen

Gently wipe the screen with a dry part of your cloth to remove dust. Hold the screen steady by its edge so you don't flex the hinge or press into the display.

Step 5: Clean the Screen

Mist a clean section of the cloth and wipe the screen with light, even strokes from side to side. Laptop screens, especially matte anti-glare ones, are more delicate than phone glass, so use a gentle touch.

Step 6: Buff and Let It Dry

Buff away any streaks with a dry side of the cloth. Leave the laptop open for a minute to make sure everything is dry before you close the lid or power it on.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Paper towels. They can scratch coatings and leave lint behind.
  • Household glass cleaner. Ammonia and other harsh chemicals can damage anti-glare coatings.
  • Pressing hard on the screen. Laptop displays can be damaged by pressure.
  • Closing the lid on a damp keyboard. Moisture can transfer to the screen and leave marks.

Check your laptop maker's care instructions for any model-specific advice.

How Often Should You Clean Your Laptop?

Give the screen and keyboard a quick wipe once a week, and a deeper clean with compressed air once a month. If you eat at your desk, do it more often.
