If your phone charges slowly, only charges at a certain angle, or the cable won't click in all the way, the problem is often simple: pocket lint packed into the charging port. Here's how to check, and how to deal with it safely.
First, Rule Out the Easy Stuff
- Try a different cable and charger.
- Try a different outlet.
- Restart your phone.
If it still won't charge properly, check the port.
Step 1: Power Off Your Phone
Turn the phone off completely and unplug it. Never clean a port while the phone is on or charging.
Step 2: Look Inside With a Light
Shine a flashlight into the port. A clean port shows bare metal contacts. If you see grey or dark fluff packed at the back, that's lint.
Step 3: Try a Soft, Dry Brush
Start with the gentlest option: a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Brush lightly across the opening to loosen and sweep out debris. Hold the phone with the port facing down so it falls out.
Step 4: For Packed Lint, Be Very Careful
Many repair guides suggest gently loosening packed lint with a wooden or plastic toothpick, scraping lightly along the back wall and pulling the lint out. Be aware that putting objects into ports, and the contacts inside are easy to damage if not careful. If you try it, use very light pressure, never force anything, and stop if it doesn't come out easily.
What to Never Use
- Plastic or Metal objects such as pins, paper clips or needles. They can short or scratch the contacts.
- Liquids or sprays. Moisture in a port can cause corrosion and trigger liquid warnings.
- Cotton swabs. They're too big and leave fibers behind.
- Your breath. It adds moisture.
- Compressed air on iPhones. Apple specifically advises against it. For other phones, check your maker's guidance first.
Step 5: Test It
Plug your cable in. It should click in fully and sit flush. Turn the phone on and check that it charges.
How to Keep Lint Out
- Carry your phone with the port facing up in your pocket.
- Consider a case with a port cover or a dust plug.
- Give the outside of the port a quick dry brush when you clean your phone each week.
- Use wireless charging when you can to reduce wear.
