How to Clean Your Smartwatch and Fitness Tracker

How to Clean Your Smartwatch and Fitness Tracker

Your smartwatch or fitness tracker is worn all day, through workouts, commutes and even sleep. Sweat, sunscreen, lotion and skin oils build up on the screen, the sensors and especially the band. Regular cleaning keeps it comfortable to wear and the screen easy to read.

What You'll Need

  • A soft microfiber cloth
  • A screen-safe cleaner for the screen
  • A soft, dry brush for crevices

Step 1: Take It Off and Power Down

Remove your watch, take it off the charger and turn it off if you can. If the band detaches, remove it so you can clean each part properly.

Step 2: Clean the Screen

Wipe the screen with a microfiber cloth. For fingerprints or smudges, lightly mist the cloth with screen cleaner, wipe gently and buff dry.

Step 3: Clean the Back and Sensors

The sensors on the back touch your skin all day. Wipe them with a cloth lightly dampened with electronics cleaner, then dry them. Don't push anything into sensor openings, speaker holes or buttons.

Step 4: Clean the Band

  • Silicone or sport bands: rinse with fresh water or all-purpose electronics cleaner and wipe with a damp cloth, then dry completely.
  • Woven or fabric bands: follow the care label. Many can be hand-washed gently and air-dried.
  • Leather bands: wipe with a barely damp cloth and let dry naturally. Don't soak them.
  • Metal bands: wipe with a soft cloth and use a dry toothbrush to clear the links.

Step 5: Dry Everything Before You Wear It

Let the watch and band dry completely before putting it back on. Trapped moisture under the band can irritate your skin.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming "water resistant" means "washable". Water resistance has limits. Check your model's rating and your maker's cleaning guidance.
  • Using harsh soaps or household cleaners, which can damage bands and coatings.
  • Using heat to dry it faster. Let it air dry.

How Often Should You Clean It?

Wipe it after every workout, and give the whole watch and band a proper clean once a week.
