Tablets live a busy life. They're propped up next to recipes, handed to kids in the back seat and used on the couch with snacks nearby. A big screen means big smudges. Here's how to clean it properly without harming the display.
What You'll Need
- A clean microfiber cloth
- A screen-safe cleaner made for electronics
- A soft, dry brush (optional, for ports and keyboard cases)
Step 1: Power Off and Unplug
Turn your tablet off and remove the charging cable and any keyboard or accessories. Take it out of its case.
Step 2: Dry Dust the Screen
Wipe the screen gently with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and crumbs. Tablets have large screens, so work in sections from top to bottom.
Step 3: Clean With a Lightly Misted Cloth
Spray a small amount of cleaner onto your cloth, or 6-12inches of distance so that the liquid sprayed is a finer mist when it directly sprayed on a monitor so that the liquid cannot run down into the bottom edge of the panel. Wipe the screen with light pressure, using smooth side-to-side strokes.
Step 4: Buff Dry
Use a dry section of the cloth to buff away streaks. Then wipe the back and edges, taking care around the buttons, speakers and charging port.
Step 5: Clean the Case and Accessories
- Case or cover: wipe inside and out, and let it dry completely before putting the tablet back in.
- Keyboard case: use a soft brush to clear crumbs, then wipe the keys with a barely damp cloth.
- Stylus: wipe it with a lightly misted cloth, avoiding the charging connector.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Baby wipes or household wipes. They can leave residue and may contain chemicals that aren't made for screens.
- Paper towels. They leave lint and can scratch the coating.
- Putting the tablet back in a damp case. Trapped moisture isn't good for the device.
Tablets and Kids
If your tablet is a family device, clean it more often, especially after snack time. A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth after each use makes a big difference.
